The first iPod was introduced to the market on October 23, 2001 by Apple Computers Inc.
Upgrades
Apple iLife is a new media experience by Apple, iPod as iLife leading product is being upgraded annually and is the the biggest personal media player in the world.
On October 2004 iPod Photo was introduced. With new features of a color screen and image files support the iPod was no longer only a music player but a photo album as well.
The iPods design and capabilities changed over the year. New designs were developed by Apple to offers a wider range of products for different users: iPod Mini, iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano.
Today the fifth generation of iPod supports video playback and can store 30GB or 60GB on a Hard Drive depending on the model. The iPod Nano has storage capabilities of 2GB or 4GB on a Flash Drive depending on the model.
In the future the new generations of iPod will be equipped with video camera and WiFi connection (wireless connection) for internet.
iTunes
Apple iPod has several important accessories and components that are a part of the new music experience Apple are creating. iTunes is iPods official software for updating the data, removing or adding songs, videos and photos to the iPod. iTunes gives users the option of buying music and video files online and downloading the the new data to the iPod. The search engine Google also offers downloads of media files to your iPod with a new system - Google Video.
iTune software might have some difficulties running on other operating systems than Mac OS X such as Windows and Linux.

Today Apple iPod has a lot of competitors. iRiver that offers a similar user interface. Large corporations like Sony and HP also came up with their on personal multimedia player but the iPods success is beyond the imagination of these new products. The "iPod mania" started at 2004 when the 4th generation was introduced and iPod is the hottest thing on the market since then. Among all the competitors the iPod stand out for it's high quality of music and video playback and a unique design and user interface.
